Ancient chinese syntax is a subfield of historical linguistics focused on the systematic investigation of the grammatical structures of the Chinese language during its ancient historical stages, primarily Old Chinese and Middle Chinese. It examines principles of sentence formation, word order (including functional aspects like topic-comment structure), grammatical relations, and morphosyntactic features as evidenced in historical textual corpora, often contending with challenges posed by the logographic script and limited overt morphological marking.
